Abby Peterfeso, MA, LPCC

Hi there! Thanks for taking a moment to learn a bit about me! I’m a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, with an MA in Clinical Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado, and a BA in Psychology from Gustavus Adolphus College. I’ve been in practice for over 10 years, though the majority of my work has been in Colorado. I returned home to Minnesota in 2017, and am thrilled to continue my work here!

Areas of special interest for me include Adult ADHD, anxiety (worry, panic, phobias, stress) trauma, performance development, PTSD, eating disorders, and body image and acceptance. I am also trained in EMDR and as an ADHD coach for high school and college students.

How I Work

I see the best in others, and want to help you see this in yourself too! I fully believe when we can wholeheartedly accept ourselves, and honestly and compassionately explore what’s working and what’s not, and what we truly value in life, then we can create meaningful change.

I focus on understanding emotions, the mind-body connection, and self compassion and acceptance. My approach is collaborative, rooted in the belief that a strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation for effective therapy. You get to be the expert in your life, and I will support and encourage you along the way.

Therapy with me is an active process. I may ask you to experiment and try on some new things, however the final say is always with you. I am not a therapist who will give you a formalized, step by step process to get from point A to point B. I believe that we are all unique and our circumstances differ, and therefore how you achieve your goals will be specific to you. You can expect that I will provide you with kind, honest and direct feedback, share any knowledge I have that I think may be valuable to you, and highlight patterns and beliefs about yourself, others and the world that may be interfering with your goals, so that we can explore these together from a place of curiosity. I will show up in an honest and authentic way and invite you to do the same, so that we can fully take advantage of our time together.

I integrate mindfulness based practices, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

What Sets Me Apart As a Therapist?

I feel really fortunate to get to do the work I do, and believe one of the best gifts we can both give and receive is to truly see and accept someone as they are, in this moment. This is what I strive to offer each person I meet in therapy.

Some of the feedback I have received from those I have worked with is that I am very real and genuine; what you see is what you get. They also tend to tell me that I get to the heart of an issue quickly, connect major themes in ways they hadn’t seen before, explain things in an understandable and relatable way, introduce them to new skills they have not encountered in previous therapy, and that my presence is very calming.

If this sounds like it may be a good fit for you, please reach out! I’d be happy to talk more about how we can work together.
