Madeleine Coulter, MA, JD, LPCC

Hello, I’m Maddie! I’m a queer, Latinx therapist and I work with adults (18+) in all stages of life on an individual basis. I focus on LGBTQIA+ issues, trauma (including religious trauma), and personality disorders. Since I have a background in law, I also enjoy working with lawyers and law students. I use a combination of techniques including Brainspotting (a trauma-specific technique), Internal Family Systems, and teaching therapy skills.

How I Work

My clients over the years have told me that my most-used phrase is “Feel your feelings!” My therapeutic approach starts from the idea that there are NO wrong emotions and NO wrong answers. This gives us a chance to explore exactly how you’re feeling and why without judgment and without pressure. Because of this, I welcome strong, big emotions in sessions with me. You are free to cry, to laugh, to rage, to sit in silence–all of it is acceptable in my office. Therapy with me includes lots of talking, some laughter, some tears, and probably a few strange metaphors that somehow work in the moment. A typical session includes checking in about the week, asking about what you’d like to process, and reviewing some of our goals. I don’t often give homework assignments, but when I do, it’s typically something open to interpretation.

I love nerding out about psychology, so if you want to hear it, I am full of facts and data about the science of how our brains work! My style is warm, focused on equality and justice, full of humor, and flexible. I make lots of room for client autonomy and client-led process, but I am also willing to hold you gently accountable to make changes. This is YOUR process, and I am here to support you in changing in all the ways YOU want to!

What Sets Me Apart As a Therapist?

I had a non-traditional journey to becoming a therapist, and at first I thought I was going to be a lawyer. (I even went to law school!) So I am always excited to work with folks who are still finding their path or are ready to make a big change. It’s never too late to start again.

I am a huge fan of therapy myself, and have seen some truly excellent therapists in my own mental health journey over the last 10 years. Removing stigma and facing shame is very important to me. I am also a huge nerd, and often will reference things like Dungeons and Dragons or Stardew Valley.
