Michael Jacob, MS

Hello! My name is Michael (he/him). I have a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Wisconsin – Stout and a Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. I am currently working on becoming a licensed professional clinical counselor in Minnesota.

I work individually with adolescents and adults, especially those from marginalized communities, by providing counseling that is focused on the client and the environment they live in. I work with clients who are struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, self-image, and relationships; and with clients who are questioning their sexuality, gender, and self-expression. My role is to help you become the most authentic version of yourself and I am honored to be part of that journey with you.

Michael is able to accept all of our contracted insurance plans except the following. Feel free to ask about out-of-network or sliding scale availability.
  • Health Partners commercial (he can accept HealthPartners PMAP/Medicaid plans)
  • Medicare
  • Multiplan
  • Tricare

How I Work

The idea of therapy can be scary and overwhelming but it doesn’t have to feel that way! From the very start of the process, I will ensure you feel heard, supported, and accepted. The most important part of therapy is how comfortable you feel with your therapist because that’s what allows you to bring your full self into our work together. Together we will make therapy an equitable experience, where you bring your honesty, openness, and motivation. And on my side, I will bring skills and abilities that I have learned to assist you in your journey. Together we will work to better understand your thoughts, emotions, actions, and the environment you live in. I will utilize a variety of techniques that are tailored to you, your needs, and your goals to help you start living the life you want to live.

What Sets Me Apart As a Therapist?

My journey to becoming a mental health counselor started with my own desire to understand myself and others around me. As a counselor, I am striving to understand my clients and their world. Clients have shared that they feel comfortable with me, can trust me, and that they feel heard and respected. Clients have also shared that I have helped them make sense of the experiences they have had. I also enjoy bringing some fun and laughter to sessions. It is as important to celebrate the positives and successes in life as it is to explore the dark and the struggles.

As a gay man, I bring my own experiences and knowledge of what it is like to live in a world that is not always the most supportive of being your true self. I am aware of and sensitive to the struggles that LGBTQIA+ individuals have but I also know that my experiences are unique, and not the same as yours. I am always learning and being educated to provide better services for clients and to be a better member of the community.
