Greetings from the Help Zone! I’m Ron. I earned my BS in Psychology from Charleston Southern University and my MEd in Clinical Counseling from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. I enjoy working with children (0-12), adults, seniors, military members, Minnesota transplants, and political refugees. Areas I specialize in include ADHD, child development and behavior, parent/child relationships, school transitions, blended family issues, military lifestyle and adjustment, LGBTQIA+ issues, grief and loss, self-esteem, and adult life transitions. If you think I might be the counselor for you and your issue isn’t listed, just ask.
I’m a ham radio operator who likes to listen more than talk (no surprise there). I LOVE music and dabble in music production. I’m married to an amazing person and have children, grandchildren, and fur children. Enough about me-I really want to get to know you!
How I Work
In the first session, I’m most interested in learning why you’re seeking counseling and what you hope to accomplish. I’ll gather some important background information to more fully understand your situation. You’ll have an opportunity to express what you’re feeling or experiencing so you can get some sense of relief and feel more reassured you came to the right place. In our ongoing sessions, we’ll develop a plan for what you want to accomplish and set goals and tasks to get you there. Each session, we’ll evaluate your progress until we agree you’re ready to move forward on your own. That day often comes faster than you might imagine. I see value for you in securing a positive outcome as quickly as possible since this increases the likelihood you’ll willingly seek counseling again, should you need it.
I am a nice blend of support and direction as needed, facilitating your strengths and developing your skills and abilities. As I will learn from you, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from me. In doing so, hopefully you’ll understand yourself better. I embrace the healing power of humor and laughter and engage in play as a way to establish connection and communicate with children. I have learned many children’s concerns during a fun game of Uno.
What Sets Me Apart As a Therapist?
I am definitely older than most other therapists I know, and I consider that a positive. I have experience that has been informed by working with a lot of clients and living a lot of life. This is probably why I’m skilled at (and like) getting quickly to the heart of the matter. Life is to be lived fully. I want you to be able to do just that.
