New Year’s Resolutions That Prioritize Self-Care
We’ve reached the point where New Year’s resolutions are a punch line. We joke about how quickly we’ll break such resolutions and we know we’ll get knowing nods in reply. Therefore, for starters, keep in mind that you’re not limited to making positive changes on January 1. If it feels like too much pressure, pick a different day. Think of that choice as self-care.
Speaking of self-care, whenever you pledge to elevate your life, an ideal choice is to create new guidelines. It doesn’t have to be about numbers, pounds, or bank accounts. Some of the most powerful commitments you can make are to yourself in subtle but consistent ways.
What is Self-Care?

What stands out about self-care is that it involves action. You are giving yourself permission to take self-loving steps even when your life is busy and your mind feels overwhelmed. So why not integrate this productive step into your New Year’s resolution plans?
A Few New Year’s Resolutions That Prioritize Self-Care
Mindfulness
Thanks to non-stop responsibilities, notifications, and stressors, we all do a lot of time travel. We worry about the past. We get anxious about the future. Meanwhile, the present — right here and right now — gets ignored. Mindfulness is a practice designed to keep us rooted in the present moment. Such a practice might involve breathwork or meditation. Among many other things, this has been shown to reduce stress, increase positive energy, better emotional regulation, and provide mental clarity.
Cultivate Balance
When you find a healthy balance of rest and work you will feel more at ease and capable of making wise decisions. Put in the time to find out what works best for you and try implementing that schedule into your daily life. Some elements to keep in mind include healthy eating choices, regular sleep habits, and the right amount of physical activity.
Challenge Yourself
Your mind and body love to be challenged so commit to learning new skills this year. It’ll boost your confidence, increase your creativity, and inspire others around you. Try some new recipes, master another language, buy some paintbrushes and get creative, or perhaps, learn how to budget. Taking control of your financial wellness is most definitely a form of self-care. Take on the challenge of creating a budget and sticking to it. Such a step can reduce stress as much as taking a daily bath.
Make It a Group Effort
As you conjure up new methods of self-care, invite others to join you. This is an excellent way to hold each other accountable while deepening your interpersonal connections.
A Few Tips
- Break down your goals into smaller, more easily attainable steps
- Set resolutions that are more realistic than aspirational by having them fit who you are right now
- Don’t create resolutions that conflict with other resolutions — think “big picture”
- Ask for help
On that last note, after years or even decades of not reaching your goals or dreams, it’s wise to seek guidance. A seasoned anxiety therapist is ideally positioned to help you explore your previous efforts and develop a new sense of purpose. If both New Year’s resolutions and the concept of self-care feel daunting, why not get the support you need and deserve?
